     Multiscale Modeling of Multiphase Reactors Multiphase reactors are widely used in the chemical industry. The design methods and the basic understanding of these reactors have increased considerably in the last three decades. In spite of these advances, the design and scaleup remains a challenging task due to the fact that these systems span a multitude of scales of several orders of magnitude. Hence it is appropriate to approach the problem in terms of a multiscale modeling methodology. The goal of this lecture is to review the developments in this field and use of a multiscale approach for scaleup of three phase reactors. Applications to a common type of three phase reactors, the trickle beds reactor, is illustrated. Next the use of a multiscale approach in process development of multiphase reaction systems is illustrated by considering the solid acid systems for alkylation as a test example. Some ideas for future research in these areas are identified.
